This Post is gonna kick things off by summarizing the latest releases 2.10.4 and GeoNode 3.

Yeah, you understood correctly, there is a new major version out now. However, let's start at the beginning.

With the life of Python 2.7 ending in 2020 — it is a matter of course: GeoNode needing an overhaul for python 3 compatibilities.

To stick with clarity and precision, the development team has decided to give the new child a name as major version: GeoNode 3 was born!

Alongside a lot of helping hands inside our community, two major contributors took the challenge in doing the main work on the Code Base of GeoNode 3. Namly Geosolutions (Italy) and Catalyst (New Zealand). The ladder being a relatively new contributor — concerning our community, and we'd love to see more
contributions!

Don't upgrade before backing up your data!

There are a lot of internal changes from version 2.0 to 2.4, and even from 2.4 pre-release to 2.4 final.

The recommended upgrde path is to set up a new server from scratch and migrate the data to it.

Installation Instructions

The automatic installer is available for Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:geonode/stable

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install geonode

geonode createsuperuser

sudo geonode-updateip 127.0.0.1

GeoNode 2.0

The GeoNode team is proud to announce the release of GeoNode 2.0. This
is a huge step forward for the project in usability, stability, and
flexibility. The team reworked the core to be much easier to customize
with Django. And then worked out countless bugs so that it is a stable
server. 2.0 brings a complete redesign of the user experience,
integrating Bootstrap to enable easier front-end customization.

Another huge effort for 2.0 has been
documentation for users,
developers and administrators to all get up to speed quickly. The <a href"http://docs.geonode.org/en/latest/tutorials/index.html" target="_blank">tutorials have been used in a number of live workshops, so are battle-tested to work well.

Help The World Bank build a GeoNode to QGis bridge

THE WORLD BANK/IFC/M.I.G.A.
OFFICE MEMORANDUM
POSITION: Short Term Consultant: Software Developer - OpenDRI/SAFE
Grade Level: STC2
Duration: 40 days, with possibility for extension
Starting Date: November 1, 2012

Background:

The Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) is a partnership of the World Bank, United Nations, major donors and recipient countries under the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) system to support the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA). The HFA, endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly and ratified by 168 countries, is the primary international agreement for disaster reduction. HFA’s principal goal is to effectively integrate, in a coherent manner, disaster risk considerations into sustainable development policies, planning, programming, and financing at all levels of government. Launched in September 2006, GFDRR provides technical and financial assistance to help disaster-prone countries decrease their vulnerability and adapt to climate change. GFDRR works closely with UN agencies, client governments, World Bank regional offices, and other partners.

The GFDRR is organized along three tracks of operation to achieve its development objectives at the global, regional and country levels. Track I focuses on enhanced global and regional advocacy, partnerships, and standardization of disaster risk management tools and methodologies. Track II provides technical assistance for targeted countries to mainstream disaster risk reduction in strategic planning and development policies focusing on poverty reduction strategies. Track III provides rapid and predictable disaster recovery assistance through the Standby Recovery Financing Facility (SRFF).

In order to build resilient societies, policy-makers and the public must have access to the right data and information to inform good decisions. -- decisions such as where and how to build safer schools, how to insure farmers against drought, and how to protect coastal cities against future climate impacts. Sharing data and creating open systems promotes transparency, accountability, and ensures a wide range of actors are able to participate in the challenge of building resilience. The Open Data for Resilience Initiative (OpenDRI) aims to reduce the impact of disasters by empowering decisions-makers with better information and the tools to support their decisions.

OpenDRI implements the first policy recommendation of the joint World Bank / United Nations Flagship report, “Natural Hazards, UnNatural Disasters, the Economics of Effective Prevention,” which establishes the importance of data sharing to reduce vulnerability to disasters. OpenDRI also builds upon the World Bank’s broader Open Data Initiative. OpenDRI is currently implementing these ideas in 25 countries around the world to improve disaster and climate resilience.

Collaboration with the Australia-Indonesia Facility for Disaster Reduction (AIFDR) and the World Bank/GFDRR through OpenDRI and the Building Urban Resilience in East Asia program has yielded the prototype Disaster Risk Management decision support tool. This web-based open source software has been designed to be flexible and extensible to promote new customization following user feedback. Based on the successful demonstration of the prototype tool, there is demand from the key stakeholder at the national disaster management agency (BNPB) for the productization of the tool under the name InaSAFE (Indonesian Scenario Assessment for Emergencies) including expanded software development, testing, documentation, and user training. The abstracted tool, “SAFE” and other risk information decision making applications are anticipated to be flagship products for OpenDRI and the EAP Region, with strategic partnerships extending to other Bank programs and external International organizations.

SAFE provides a simple yet rigorous way to combine data from scientists, local governments and communities to provide insights into the likely impacts of future disaster events. The software is focused on examining, in detail, the impacts by a single hazard would have on specific sectors. For example, how many people would be affected by a possible flood in Jakarta?

SAFE is built on top of the Quantum Geographical Information System (QGIS) platform and leverages the GeoNode open-source geospatial data management platform. It combines the critical elements of GIS analysis with the ability to quantify impact metrics that can be used for informed decision making. Being able to quantify the impacts a disaster event is a key element of planning risk reduction investments. Having flexible, dynamic and simple tools such as SAFE to assist in this is a step towards more resilient decisions and a critical component of the OpenDRI work program.

A top priority for this initiative is to continue to strengthen the software functionality to seamlessly link between the desktop and web-based realizations of SAFE. For this purpose, the current scope of work focuses on the following tasks: Develop a QGIS Plugin to import layers from a GeoNode and publish layers to it. Creating and editing geospatial information in the desktop, usually offline, and then uploading to an online datastore, like GeoNode, is a common use case for projects dealing with maps and open data.

While it is currently possible to download layers from GeoNode and open them in QGIS, the process involves using a web browser, interacting with the filesystem and not having styles or metadata for the downloaded layers, only the raw data. OGC web services like WMS only fetches the rendered images but does not allow the end user to perform analysis. WFS is supported in both GeoNode and QGIS but only deals with the geometries for the vector layers not style or metadata, and WCS is currently not supported in QGIS. Furthermore, there are currently different workflows for raster and vector datasets in QGIS that are more focused on the technical implementation than usability for end users. For users dealing with GIS information in the DRM context, it makes more sense to browse by catagories: hazard, exposure and others and spatial type.

Duties and Accountabilities:
The proposed body of work consists of giving an unified access from the QGIS application to data on a GeoNode site, while making the distinction between raster and vector data as seamless as possible, the main use case for this is the Scenario Assessment For Emergencies tool (SAFE) [1]. All code developed will be released by the World Bank under an open source license.

Under the supervision of Ariel Nunez, the candidate will report to Francis Ghesquiere. Remote work is allowed.

S/he will be responsible for developing a QGIS plugin with the following specifications:

Ability to configure a GeoNode URL, username and password and let QGIS users see the list of layers in the GeoNode and add them to the QGIS workspace. (Including WMS, WFS, WCS and available styles).

Ability to upload a layer or group of layers into GeoNode (with title, description, keywords and style, as individual layers, fully configured maps are out of scope for this task).

Set up of an integration test framework of the QGIS plugin against a GeoNode installed via Ubuntu packages.

Packaging and releasing code to QGIS official repository.

Testing and documentation.

Target Software versions:
GeoNode 1.2
QGIS 1.8

Selection Criteria:

Master's degree in software engineering or other relevant field.

At least 3 years of experience writing software in Python

At least 3 years of experience writing Geospatial Software

Experience writing QGIS plugins (at least one plugin released to an official or unofficial QGIS plugin repository).

Experience and demonstrated participation in relevant open source software communities.

Demonstrated ability to write technical documentation

Excellent organization and communication skills.

GeoNode Roadmapping Summit and Sprint, February 2012

Building on the success of last year's GeoNode summit, folks representing Eldarion, GFDRR, Harvard CGA, MapStory, OpenGeo, SpatialDev, WFP and others met at Harvard University. The summit was designed to get many of the major GeoNode partners together to coordinate around a shared development roadmap and commit resources to following through on it.

On Monday, February 6th, the first day of the summit, each participating organization presented on how they're using GeoNode, what they've accomplished since the last summit, and what their primary goals and concerns are in the coming year (here presentations from OpenDRI, WFP, and WorldMap) .Following these reintroductions, David Winslow, Chair of the GeoNode Project Steering Committee, presented on the state of the software with a particular focus on the state of things on Github.

On Tuesday, February 7th, we discussed current development efforts, brainstormed ideas about GeoNode features, and used a dot-voting exercise to sort through roadmap items. Issues that were discussed as community priorities include a well-documented public REST API, offline support with synchronization, and better installation and migration. We also highlighted active development efforts from across various projects and organizations; contact the geonode-org mailing list to get involved in or influence these efforts:

"View only" permissions

For the remainder of the week, GeoNode developers sprinted on improving the GeoNode core. Among the improvements were:

Integrating pull requests from the GeoNode GitHub project.

GeoNode localizations for Greek, French, Indonesian, and Chinese locales. Thanks to the GeoNode community members who've helped with these translations.

Improvements and additions to the GeoNode documentation.

Refactorings to make GeoNode conform better to Django conventions and thereby provide an easier development environment for Django developers.

In addition to these outstanding patches from the community, the sprint also saw some new work:

Integration of the South migration framework to simplify the deployment of future GeoNode features and bugfixes.

Group code review exercise to share knowledge and best practices for GeoNode development.

"Clean up" some existing branches in order to create more pull requests.

Improvements to GeoNode's infrastructure to better support metadata from extensions such as ITHACA's document mapping.

In summary, it was a productive week for GeoNode.

GeoNode in the Eastern Caribbean

Last week, Ariel Núñez, a member of the GeoNode community, participated at a workshop in Grenada entitled "Data Management using Open Source Software in the Caribbean" in which he lead two sessions: one two-hour training for forty participants on using GeoNode and another two-hour training for twenty participants on installing and customizing GeoNode.

Seven countries and six regional entities participated in the workshop, including UNDP, CDEMA and the CCRIF. Many of the participants had already deployed their own GeoNodes with support from The World Bank, bringing the total number of GeoNodes in the region to six: St Lucia, Grenada, St Vincent, UWI Trinidad, Haiti, and the CCRIF. While all the projects are in the very early stages, there's a strong commitment to promoting data sharing between agencies across the Caribbean—not to mention a lot of excitement towards using open standards and better collaborating around disaster risk data more generally.

Quote of the day: "a wave of excitement has taken over the country," from Jim Joseph, the St Lucian delegate in reference to their GeoNode project.

GeoNode 1.1-RC1

The GeoNode team is proud to release GeoNode 1.1-RC1, another important milestone towards GeoNode 1.1. All planned features for GeoNode 1.1 are in place for this release but some testing, bug fixing, and documentation remains to be done before the final release. This unstable release is intended to allow GeoNode users to help us identify bugs before the final release. As always, be sure to backup any existing data and configuration before attempting to upgrade. Download it now!

New goodies

This release attempts to simplify GeoNode installations and comes bundled with sample config files as well as scripts to install GeoNode in Ubuntu.

Support for GeoServer 2.1, including:

GeoWebCache integration

direct Shapefile-to-PostGIS import from the GeoNode upload form

Support for GeoNetwork 2.6* speed improvements to the way GeoNode manages GeoServer configuration

Various UI improvements, including:

a new user profile page listing the user’s layers and maps

a “Get feature info” tool to identify feature attributes when viewing maps

Increased coverage in GeoNode's automated test suite

Numerous bug fixes thanks to support from partners at the roadmapping summit

Installer scripts

Much work has gone into simplifying and automating the installation process for GeoNode for this release. The .tar.gz distribution now includes an "install.sh" script that automatically adds GeoNode files to the proper places in the system. While this script has so far only been developed for Ubuntu systems, we aspire to generalize it for use with GeoNode installations across different Unix-like systems.

If you're a systems administrator with an interest in GeoNode, testing and improving this script is a great way to help out. See the documentation for details.

Ubuntu packages

Based on the installer scripts, we have created new GeoNode packages to provide you with easier updates. It's our goal to support an automated transition from 1.1-RC1 to 1.1 final but we are counting on your help to iron out the process. Details about installation are available in the manual.

Known Issues

Changes to the way GeoServer is deployed mean that upgrading a previously installed GeoNode is currently problematic. Before the final release we will be providing an automatic solution to help with this migration, but currently it is not advised to attempt upgrading pre-existing GeoNode installations. As mentioned above, be sure to backup any existing data and configuration before attempting to upgrade.

Thanks

Thanks to AIFDR and GEM for their contributions toward the "Rock Solid" initiative to improve GeoNode test coverage, Harvard CGA's Worldmap for their contributions in supporting better PostGIS integration in GeoNode, and GFDRR for their heavy time investment in the installation scripts. Other GeoNode users have also contributed translations and theme corrections for this release.

GeoNode 1.1-beta2

The GeoNode team is proud to release GeoNode 1.1-beta2, the first public beta of the GeoNode 1.1 release series. All planned features for GeoNode 1.1 are in place for this release but further work in testing, bug fixing, and documentation remains to be done before the final GeoNode 1.1 release. This unstable release is intended to allow GeoNode users to help us identify bugs before the final release. You can download it from http://dev.geonode.org/release/.

New Features

New features planned for this release include:

Support for GeoServer 2.1, including GeoWebCache integration and direct Shapefile-to-PostGIS import from the GeoNode upload form

Support for GeoNetwork 2.6* speed improvements to the way GeoNode manages GeoServer configuration

Various UI improvments including a new user profile page listing the user's layers and maps and a "Get feature info" button on map viewers

Migration

No migration should be needed for existing sites as the database structure remains unchanged. Note, however, that GeoServer data directories are irreversibly modified simply by being loaded in a later version of GeoServer and should be backed up before the upgrade to allow for subsequent downgrades.

If desired, GeoWebCache integration must be enabled via the GeoServer Web UI and pre-existing maps must be updated to use a WMS-C layer instead of the more general WMS layer. Newly created maps will use the WMS-C layer by default. You can update already-extant layers using the django python shell:
`
$ cd ../geonode/
$ source bin/activate
(geonode) $ django-admin.py shell --settings=geonode.settings

from geonode.maps.models import MapLayer
MapLayer.objects.filter(sourcecfg='{"ptype": "gxwmssource"}').update(sourcecfg='{"ptype": "gxpwmscsource"}')`

Known Regressions

Known regressions in this release include:

GeoNode-hosted layers are not properly hyperlinked on map information pages

GeoNetwork and GeoServer do not link back to the GeoNode layer detail page in CSW and WMS metadata

Layer detail pages do not work for layers which are not world-visible

For the full list of known issues, see http://dev.geonode.org/trac/report/10.

Following on the heels of the Roadmapping Summit, the Project Steering Committee has now approved a community patch review policy, with criteria for valid reviews. If you are participating in GeoNode development, please look these over:

GeoNode Roadmapping Summit, May 2011

Last week's GeoNode Roadmapping Summit was a big success! The summit was designed to get all the major GeoNode partners together to coordinate around a shared development roadmap and commit resources to following through on it. Held at the World Bank offices in Washington DC, the summit included folks from AIFDR, GEM, GFDRR, Harvard CGA, SERVIR, and SOPAC, among others.

On Thursday morning of May 19th, the first day of the summit, each participating organization presented its vision for its use of GeoNode. Many of these presentations are now available online:

Following this, like-minded people came together in breakout groups to synchronize ideas about GeoNode features. Along with prior community contributions of feature ideas, these groups produced a comprehensive list of possible GeoNode improvements.

By the afternoon, the ideas were flowing. David Winslow, Chair of the GeoNode Project Steering Committee, gave a talk about upcoming updates to the GeoNode development process. These included the GeoNode Improvement Process—a system for proposing new GeoNode features—and patch review guidelines. The PSC hopes that these policies will make it easier to work together as more developers get involved.

We ended Thursday at St. Arnold's for their happy hour.

On Friday, May 20th, we used a dot-voting technique to sort through the roadmap items. Each item was printed and taped to the wall. Participants discussed the features together or in small groups, then added green stickers to the paper to see which features were needed across the many organizations. Developers added red stickers to provide a sense of implementation difficulty.

This made it easy to see where we had common needs and how to approach them. We made several community decisions:

Participating organizations will be pooling resources to collaboratively fund and develop features of common interest.

The highest immediate priority is to make GeoNode "Rock Solid!"—which amounts to good software quality, test coverage, stability, documentation, etc. The community will be working on this as it brings its upcoming 1.1-beta release to 1.1 final.

After the 1.1 release, we expect to have community policies in place that guarantee good test coverage, documentation, etc.

Beyond that, the highest priority features, based on community vote and slated for the 1.x track, are:

a public REST API for data, maps, security, etc.

importing remote WMS layers and service, as a first step on the long road towards federation.

Another commonly desired feature is an ArcGIS plugin that will allow users to export layers to GeoNode. Plans for implementing this plugin are underway.

We sketched out a process for adding new items to the roadmap and voting on them based on wiki pages. We'll be writing it up shortly.

We also made plans for a quarterly conference call to discuss progress and decided to do these Roadmapping Summits semi-annually, at which point we will officially update the GeoNode roadmap and (probably) recast votes, hopefully with new partners.

In summary, it was a highly productive two days of meetings and the first GeoNode Roadmapping Summit appears to have been a good start towards a bright future for GeoNode.

GeoNode Announcement List

Hello everyone,

We are aware that there are many people out there who are interested in following GeoNode progress but do not want to be part of a high-traffic Users list or highly-technical Developers list.

To serve these people better, we have created an Announcement list. It will be broadcast only (no discussion) of announcements pertaining to recent developments, PSC news, and project milestones. We expect a maximum of one email per week. If you are interested, just subscribe.

Announcements will be cross-posted to the users list, so anyone subscribed to that need not join.

Thanks for your interest!

Data.gov is dead. Long live open data!2011-04-04T00:00:00+00:002011-04-04T00:00:00+00:00http://geonode.org/blog/2011/04/04/data-gov-is-dead-long-live-open-data/

Data.gov is dead. Long live open data!

The U.S. open government project Data.gov is going dark at the end of May.

The Obama administration launched data.gov in April 2009, stating that all government data "that is not restricted for national security reasons can be made public" through data feeds. It promised to spearhead the federal open government movement and provide government-as-a-service that efficiently leveraged talents across the country.

Data.gov received mixed reviews. By a number of accounts, it has failed to be the transformative force it was slated to become. Why? Many claim the platform was not as open as it could be, in some cases requiring proprietary software to make use of the data. While such a public-private partnership can sometimes be efficient, a system that grants everyone equal access to content, regardless of the method, is vital for long-term success. If you doubt this, imagine websites that can only be visited by a certain browser.

This brings us to GeoNode, which is, in effect, a data.gov that you can host. It allows for the publishing, sharing, and dissemination of geospatial data and maps. It has built-in security settings, graphical map editing, and endless mashup potential. Most importantly, GeoNode operates entirely with openness in mind. GeoNode publishes data and maps using open standards, all the data is designed to be open and distributed (in any format you choose), and the code base itself is completely open source as well.

Agencies are starting to see the value of GeoNode. The World Bank has been using and advocating for GeoNode for some time now. And it's not just the government sector, as we talked about back in February, Harvard’s Center for Geographic Analysis has been using GeoNode to extend the collaborative potential in its WorldMap application.

The demise of Data.gov is not, by any means, a blow for transparency. The problem that Data.gov was designed to solve still remains across all levels of government and we can learn some lessons from Data.gov. Government-as-a-service is in many ways still a nascent idea and the bugs are still being worked out. GeoNode can foster exactly the sort of openness and transparency that Data.gov was designed to accomplish.

GeoNode since 1.0

GeoNode's been evolving since the last 1.0 release through the contributions of a widening variety of partners.

The development team is very close to releasing GeoNode 1.0.1, which includes workflow improvements around data upload and management funded by UNISDR. It also will have a number of bug fixes. We will summarize these changes in the upcoming release announcement but for now you can see our progress on the GeoNode issue tracker.

Meanwhile, we have been developing more substantial features in preparation for another release later on. These include support for uploading large batches of data at once (as opposed to the currently supported single layer upload) and the integration of GeoWebCache, which will greatly accelerate map loading.

In addition, AIFDR has been leading development of applications that use GeoNode as a platform. Most notable of these is Risiko, formerly Risk-in-a-Box, a risk modeling application which they are developing in partnership with GFDRR Labs and OpenGeo.

As GeoNode improves, we hope it will be attractive to a widening number of organizations and users. If
you're interested in getting involved, try the demo, check the
docs and install it yourself, and join the <a

WorldMap: Supporting Academic Collaboration with Open Source2011-02-07T00:00:00+00:002011-02-07T00:00:00+00:00http://geonode.org/blog/2011/02/07/worldmap/

WorldMap: Supporting Academic Collaboration with Open Source

Harvard’s Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA) is currently developing WorldMap, an open source web mapping system that extends the capabilities of their previous AfricaMap technology by using GeoNode as a collaborative spatial data infrastructure.

AfricaMap: A Web-based Map to Support Scholars

When CGA released AfricaMap in 2008, the web mapping system was enthusiastically received by researchers both within and outside the university. While students and instructors had previously found it extremely difficult to access geographic research materials, AfricaMap allowed non-technical users easy access to more advanced GIS capabilities, including the ability to:

Easily share information by navigating an intuitive, map-based interface

Rapidly query multiple data layers, with results returned on a map

Query through many layers at a time, using transparency control for comparing layers

Bring in feeds from multiple sources

In addition to Africanists, the project drew interest from other groups that wanted a platform focused on their own geographic areas of interest. This enthusiasm brought with it new data from organizations seeking a safe place for their materials and generated demand for adding additional layers into AfricaMap. As these layers were included, AfricaMap’s utility steadily increased.

Vermont to East Asia with a FOSS Stack

Witnessing the success of AfricaMap, users interested in other parts of the world decided to create deployments for new regions and thematic areas. Since CGA developers used free, open-source technologies to develop AfricaMap, they were able to replicate this successful platform for other groups without worrying about licensing or proprietary software costs. The same technology stack now supports another five research maps:

Vermont Geology Map: http://worldmap.harvard.edu/vtmap/

Boston Research Map: http://worldmap.harvard.edu/boston

Harvard Forest DataMap: http://worldmap.harvard.edu/forest/

East Asia Map: http://worldmap.harvard.edu/eastasia/

ParisMap: http://worldmap.harvard.edu/paris/

WorldMap: Extending the Reach

[caption id="attachment_254" align="alignright" width="470" caption="Historic and contemporary Boston data can be explored in WorldMap Alpha."][![](http://geonode.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/figure2.png)](http://geonode.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/figure2.png)[/caption]

While AfricaMap was envisioned as a platform that would enable an entire community of users to create and maintain a map together, initial versions focused on providing a simple, stable application and postponed the addition of collaborative capabilities. Unfortunately, this required organizations to rely on CGA to add new maps or additional data layers, creating a bottleneck to broad adoption of the AfricaMap system.

In 2010, however, CGA began adding collaborative features to WorldMap to empower users to create and maintain their own customized maps. Because AfricaMap was built on OpenLayers, ExtJS, and GeoServer, OpenGeo's advances on the GeoNode open source stack meant that CGA could take advantage of new capabilities when building the next generation of their platform. Rather than having a single bottleneck when posting contributions from the community, WorldMap is designed to allow many individuals to be responsible for building and managing their own communities. In this way, WorldMap is designed to present an array of public maps and scholarly data that enable users from different disciplines and organizations to work collaboratively with spatial information.

GeoNode: A New Component

[caption id="attachment_253" align="alignright" width="300" caption="WorldMap architecture incorporating GeoNode"][![](http://geonode.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/figure1-300x165.png)](http://geonode.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/figure1.png)[/caption]

As with AfricaMap, CGA was committed to building WorldMap using open source technologies. While supporting user roles and collaboration requires major development efforts, CGA was able to quickly achieve results thanks to WorldMap's open source, interoperable architecture. By working with OpenGeo to use GeoNode as the basis for new capabilities, CGA received immediate access to key open source components supporting collaboration, mapping, metadata management, and more, including:

Built-in user login/registration

User generated maps

Uploading of shapefiles and GeoTIFFs

Permissions control over maps and layers

Metadata storage & search through GeoNetwork

Interactive layer style editing

Giving Back: The Beauty of Open Source

We're happy to welcome CGA to an open source community that is committed to the shared mission of empowering non-technical users to collaborate on advanced mapping and data sharing tools. Going forward, CGA will be committing the WorldMap improvements to the appropriate open source communities, including GeoNode, Django, ExtJS, GeoServer, OpenLayers, PostGIS, GEOS, GDAL, OGR, etc.

According to Ben Lewis, project manager for WorldMap: “We value the open source community very highly for many reasons social and technical which is why we are building WorldMap from open source components."

Sebastian Benthall, program manager for GeoNode at OpenGeo, adds: "It is inspiring to see what WorldMap has done with GeoNode. They have taken advantage of the core software's flexibility to add impressive new features. That's how we hope people will use GeoNode, and a big part of why we made it open source."

The innovations that Harvard’s CGA is realizing for its users create more opportunities for university deployments of GeoNode. Improvements for WorldMap benefit not only its own users, but assist other universities and institutions in further customizing GeoNode deployments for their own users and projects. By sharing data from one another's GeoNodes, institutions can enable scholars from different disciplines and organizations to work collaboratively with spatial information. WorldMap allows users to publish and access the best contemporary and historic data for a particular site, city, region, or continent.

The beta version of WorldMap is projected to be completed by March 2010, pre-release training will be in May 2010, and the full release is scheduled for July 2010.

After over two months of bugfixes and user interface tweaks, the GeoNode team is proud to present the third release candidate for GeoNode 1.0. This release improves on the user management, data upload, metadata management, GeoNetwork-powered data search, and an integrated styling and map composing tools from 1.0-beta with many bugfixes and user interface improvements.

Notable changes since RC2 include:

Correcting a bug in the error handling during data upload which could result in "orphaned" layer records entering the Django database without corresponding GeoServer layers configured. Systems affected by this issue have invalid layer entries in the Django database, so administrators upgrading pre-existing deployments should use the “django-admin.py cleardeadlayers” tool to automatically correct the erroneous records.

GeoNode now recognizes some common aliases for the "web mercator" projection used by Google Maps and other commercial tile providers, so that services which support this projection but use a different SRID for it than the OpenLayers default of "EPSG:900913" can be used in the map composer.

GeoNode developer and deployment documentation is now available at http://docs.geonode.org/

Looking for Partners

Many of us at OpenGeo have been eagerly working on GeoNode over the past few months. As the number of organizations interested in the project increases, the time has come to bring more partners into the mix to further develop this growing project.

Of particular interest are organizations with skills in cartography, web design, and graphic design—especially those with experience in Django, Pinax, GeoServer, and OpenLayers. Additionally, many prospective GeoNode users are interested in paper-based data collection workflows and greater OpenStreetMap integration.

If you or your organization is interested in partnering with OpenGeo on opportunities related to GeoNode development and design, or are curious about committing to the GeoNode as an open source project then please don't hesitate to email seb [at] opengeo [dot] org for more information.

GeoNode development drives GeoExt Styling components2010-03-02T00:00:00+00:002010-03-02T00:00:00+00:00http://geonode.org/blog/2010/03/02/geonode-development-drives-geoext-styling-components/

GeoNode development drives GeoExt Styling components

One of the features we hope to add to GeoNode in the next month or two is an integrated Styler application. It will enable users to use GeoNode as a cartographic tool.

The aim of including this kind of GIS feature in GeoNode is to provide users a practical incentive to upload and maintain their data. Engaged users are the key to successful data management on the internet, and it should be no different for spatial data infrastructure.

Also key to the GeoNode's plan for success is that it is built on a robust base of open source tools. That's why as part of our development of the integrated Styler application, OpenGeo is contributing styling user interface components to GeoExt. By dedicating our effort to the underlying open source communities, we can share the results of our work with as many people as possible. And later, as the GeoExt community elaborates and improves upon those components, it will be easier for us to build those benefits back into GeoNode for the benefit of users.

Openness creates a win-win situation for everyone involved. That's what GeoNode is all about.
